U.S. Open 2^nserboard:

3 new updates Rory Mcilroy DeChambeau struggle to hang

on at Oakmont

Scottie Scheffler is the biggest favorite at a U.S. Open this week in 16 years

The third major championship of the season is here, and all eyes are on Scottie Scheffleras he tees off in the afternoon wave.

As the morning wave finishes their rounds, it’s J.J. Spaun who sits atop the leaderboard with a stunning 4-under 66. It’s the best round of the day so far.

Don’t expect lower numbers in the

afternoon, as Oakmont is only going to get

tougher.

As for Rory Mcelroy and Bryson Dechambeau, it was a grind, with both

struggling to remain in contention after their first rounds. DeChambeau is in with a 3-over73, while Mcelroy shot a 4-over 74.

As for Scheffler, the top-ranked golfer in the world, he’s starting off the week as the biggest favorite the event has seen in 16years.

Scheffler has won three of his last four start sand has absolutely dominated the golf worldkin recent weeks. He won the PGA Championship by five shots last month, too, to claim his third major championship title. Awin for him this week would bring him just a British Open away from completing the career grand slam.

Scheffler in the red

After sticking his approach shot to about 6feet at the second, Scottie Scheffler has sank his first birdie of the day to get under par.

He’s only three back from J.J. Spaun now early into his round.

Rory breaks down on the back nine

Rory Mcilroy made four bogeys and a double on his back nine– he fell victim to the rough at the par-3 8th, when he couldn’t hack his tee shot out of it and walked away with a 5- to drop to 4-over on the day.

He’s 8 back of the leader now, and will need to make a pretty big move on Friday if he’s going to get back into this.

J.J. Spaun jumps in front

us open

J.J. Spaun, like everyone predicted, is the early clubhouse leader at Oakmont. Spa unfired a bogey-free 66 in the early wave to jump in front of the pack.

Spaun has one Tour win to his name (back at the 2022 Valero Texas Open), and he’s competing in his first ever U.S. Open. Today was his first ever bogey-free round in a major, and just the second bogey-free round at a U.S. Open held at Oakmont.

The lead may not hold through the afternoon, but he’s at least in a great position 18-holes in.

Thanks for playing, Phil

In what might be his final U.S. Open, Phil Mickelson started out well enough an even-par first nine that included three birdies. But Phil started on the back nine, and when he made the turn, that’s where his troubles began.

Phil went bogey-bogey-double on his first three holes of his second nine, and just like that, he fell from T11 to T41. His tournament’s not over yet, but there’s lots of work to do if he wants to stay around until the weekend.

Get your birdies on the back

In the early going, it seems that the back nine at Oakmont is playing slightly easier than the front. There have been 55 birdies carded on the back nine, compared to 47 on the front. Scoring-wise, the front is playing toa 37.93 average compared to 36.8 on the back.

These numbers are only going to rise as the sun bakes the greens at 0akmont as the day goes on. In other words, it would be a surprise to see a late-wave golfer atop the leaderboard after Round 1, though Scottie Scheffler (who tees off in about 90 minutes)might be the exception.

Oakmont rough’s latest victim: Rory Mcilroy

us open

If Oakmont seems like it’s giving up some Scores, all you have to do is wait. Case in point: Rory Mcilroy at the par 5 fourth. To this point, Mcleroy was strolling along at 1-under. And then he found the rough. As we’ve seen several times already early in Round 1, once you find the rough, it’s tough to get out. In this case, after find the rough off the tee, Mcilroy needed three shots just to get back into the fairway, and then still had 182 yards to the green.
